Working and Watching

No getting around it anymore.  Fall is definitely here.  It was drab and raining on and off for a few days.  I know we need the moisture but it certainly affects my personality.  I wanted to curl up and hibernate. But then the sun came out to take the chill from the air and I made a beeline to the barnyard to do those winterizing chores I’ve been putting off all summer.

I’ve been working in the shed every day adding insulation and putting up interior walls made of old fencing.  Lots of wood cutting and fitting and nails. More than one visitor has looked at me sideways and I know what they’re thinking.  The answer is yes, I’m doing a ridiculous amount of work for a shed for my animals.  So sue me.  I’m having a great time and I can’t think of a single thing I’d rather be doing.  I’m boring that way.

Here you can see the finished wall on the right...and more work in front of me on the left!

While I work, I watch the little stories that unfold around me.  The animals lead such amazing lives.  It’s all there to see.  That’s one of the reasons the project is taking so long.  I hear a sound, or see something out of the corner of my eye and I take a little break to investigate.  Let me show you who I saw…

Whoa! That's a little close for the photo, Tia! (I'm glad she's getting more comfortable around me.)

Tia is coming in for her blurry closeup. Makes me happy because she wouldn’t get that close a week ago!

Poor Maude and Sarah. They look so miserable. But Cindy Lou seems to have to completely missed molting season...not a feather out of place!

Very Excellent Husband Don called me late in the afternoon while I was working.  I was cutting a piece of wood for about the fifth time (I’m not good at this) and was hot and tired. My helper—Brandy the goat—was beginning to get on my nerves.  He said, “Hey!  I’m behind a car and it has a bumper sticker that reminds me of you!”

It said, My Life Is Better Than Your Vacation.   I quickly thought about my day full of wood and nails and curious animals.  I thought about my walk with the dog earlier, dinner with our parents coming up that evening. I thought about the conversations with the kids I had during the day.  I thought about learning to make cheese and canning homegrown tomato sauce in our comfy kitchen.  I thought about family and friends in our backyard watching chicken TV and sitting by the fire pit.

And I said, “That’s my life.  That is definitely my life!” 🙂

Wow ….you are such a hard worker, Joan. More power to you. I love your new alpacas….they are just beautiful. What a lovely addition to your place. I look forward to learning more about them and of course, the rest of your menagerie!

  5. It seems summer has only just begun, but here we are getting ready for the winter. It’s been raining here in Italy, too, but today the sun is out. Hopefully we’ll get some crisp autumn days before the snows start. Love your animals, Joan – and I LOVE those cutesy alpaca faces!

  6. I too just love those alpaca faces. I am hooked and if I had more space I would have some but alas not enough room so will just enjoy yours.
