Onward and Upward

When I wrote this post about Doink, I had no idea what the future would hold for my sweet pig.  I was truly scared. His physical recovery took around two weeks.  His front hoof bled on and off for three full days.  He limped for ten days.  His mouth, which I didn't even know was injured from the tooth saw, healed but still looks tender.  I didn't see him munching on grass in the early morning … [Read more...]

My Memorial Day

This is a story about my dad. I spent most of my youth as an only child of a single parent.  When I was fifteen, Mom met a man, an Army man.  They got married when I was sixteen.  SIXTEEN. I was not at my best when I was sixteen.  Not by a long shot. I. Was. Horrible. But this man, this man in the Army.  This man had patience.  He overlooked my extreme ass-hole-ness.  He was probably the … [Read more...]

Meet Dolly, Loretta and Patsy!

Well, I had to do it.  I couldn't stop myself.  What's a summer without baby chicks? Meet Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline!  They are White Leghorns, just like wonderful Scout was.  I miss seeing white eggs in the nesting box and there's something about the floppy comb of a Leghorn that's very endearing to me. White Leghorns must not be a very popular breed - I went to our … [Read more...]

April Showers Bring May Outdoor Projects

Springtime arrives!  I spend a few moments being grateful and then spring into action.  There's work to be done! The big upgrade this year was taking out the t-post fence and replacing it with something nicer.  This served two purposes - expanding the barnyard and blocking the view of the storage area behind the garage.  The posts went in a few months ago and we worked on the fence when it … [Read more...]

Was I Wrong?

This is one of the hardest post I've ever written. I've written about almost dying, giving up a dog I love dearly, and re-homing the world's nicest but noisiest rooster. This, currently, feels worse.  And it's about a pig.  An animal that many people don't think twice about eating for breakfast.  But Doink the pot-bellied pig is MY pig.  And nobody is eating him for breakfast. I do my … [Read more...]

Son of Foo Foo

Last year in July, we found a teeny tiny baby rabbit in the barnyard.  It was all alone in the straw under the lean-to. The bunny was incredibly small - only a little bit bigger than one of the chicken's eggs. Was she an orphan?  I did a bit of research and found out that a mother rabbit will feed her babies in the morning and evening and leave the nest for the rest of the day. Maybe she … [Read more...]

It’s Hard Being Keela

I watch her.  I have her within my sight almost all day every day.  So many times I see her sitting there, dead still, sometimes for almost an hour, waiting for the rabbit to get close. I have the attention span of a gnat.  I am so jealous. I speak of my dog, Keela.  Keela has a VERY strong prey drive.  I think she was less than six months old when I saw her catch her first rabbit.  She ate … [Read more...]

Happy Life Day To Me

May 3rd is a special day for me. Back in 1999, when I was 38, I woke up on May 3rd feeling less than stellar, kinda like I had the flu.  But as a busy mom with three young kids I did what I had to do - I hauled my butt out of bed and started the day.  I was sure after a shower I'd feel better. In the shower, my heart stopped beating. It stopped beating again in the emergency room.  I didn't … [Read more...]
