Mum’s The Word

I think this has been the longest I’ve gone without writing about the animals since I started this blog.  What a nutty couple of weeks it has been.  The job is crazy good, Very Excellent Husband Don gave me his very unexcellent cold that rendered me wholly unproductive. We’ve had a warm spell of weather that has been glorious.  The wind has been blowing and blowing and blowing.  That’s a mixed bag, yes?

But hey, in the past there would be a new story in the barnyard every day, a messy-this or a silly-that.  And at the end of that day—after feeding and watering and tucking everyone in—I’d pull off my dirty muck boots with the boot puller my mom gave me for Christmas (best gift ever) and go, “Whoo hoo, that was a good one!”

Sometimes they’d whisper their stories.  Sometimes they’d shout.  (Doink is not a whisperer.) They are such good storytellers.  Much better than I am.

But recently, they’ve been holding out.

Oh, yeah, I've told her a few things.

Oh, yeah, I’ve told her a few things.  A while back.

Uh, we talk. Yes. Any more questions?

Uh, of course I talk with The Lady. Yes, I do.  Well, I did.  Any more questions?

We'd love to talk, but we're awfully busy right now.

We’d love to talk, but we’re awfully busy right now.

Are they mad I’m not around as much?  Do they even notice?  I don’t know, but they’re keeping their stories close to the heart these days.

Sorry.  I’m taking in the sun right now.  Get back with me later.

Do I look like I wanna talk to you?

Do I look like I wanna chat with you?

It’s crazy.  I’m trying to listen.

I'll talk. Just not right now.

I’ll talk. Just not right now.

As you can see, I have a bit of lingering frostbite on my comb and wattles. I'm not in the mood for talking right now.

As you can see, I have a bit of lingering frostbite on my comb and wattles. I’ll tell you all about it…later.

So I guess I’ll wait.  They can’t stay mad forever.

I might, just MIGHT, have something to say...

Naw, I was just kidding!

Naw, I was just kidding!

Hilarious! Missed you and glad you’re back.

  2. Your companions are enjoying their lives, content and wrapped up in ‘barn yard’ politics!!
You’re a great listener w some cozy boot warmers, what more can you possibly need???

Reading this while working on a TV show, my trusty faithful 75lb dog Lumen at my side, and this reminds of ‘real’ life. Hugs to you and your critters!

  3. I’ve missed you too but what great photos. They tell the story on their own. I love the chooks photo and Doink, well his photo just cracks me up. The alpacas are funny too. Glad all is well apart from the dreaded cold which I think we have all had this year (me twice!).

  6. It is so difficult to be focused on two worlds at once. There is always a sacrifice. Wishing you well and hoping you are finding a balance that works. As always, looking forward to the next post.
