Introducing The Chicken Mama

So here you are at my new blog…The Chicken Mama.

You might know me from Just The Right Things.  My business/writing partner Nancy and I have been blogging there since October of 2009. Our first post is here.  Great idea, right?

Over the past three plus years, Nancy has been staying on task and writing about exactly what we set out to write about…two women in search of things that make our lives easier and more fun.  She writes about scarf tying and cleaning tips and bra fitting and organizing ideas and the easiest way to look good and lots of others helpful things.  She also posted great recipes and gift ideas.

Me?  Well, in 2011 I acquired some chickens.  Then in 2012, a goat and a pig – and more chickens.  And as hard as I tried to sit down and write something USEFUL, I kept on writing about those crazy animals and veering off into the world of coop building and animal poop.

To be fair, I did my share of recipes.  (Many were for cocktails.) I think my favorite was my Not-So-White-Trash Tater Tot Pie.

Due to my lack of focus, Just The Right Things was becoming the equivalent of blogging topic whiplash.

So instead of making our readers continue to wonder what drugs we’re on, we’ve decided to split off my barnyard ramblings into a separate blog.  I’ll still write on Just The Right Things (more cocktails coming!) and I’m sure Nancy will stop by here once and a while and share something. For those of you who are new to my menagerie, I’ll occasionally recount the history of the barnyard at The Chicken Mama so the full story is all in one place.

Makes sense, doesn’t it?

For newbies, here’s the rundown – We live in a rural neighborhood in Boulder, Colorado. The stars aligned almost 25 years ago when I convinced Very Excellent Husband Don to marry me. We had three Excellent Children in short order – Libby, Cameron and Sawyer. They’re off at college now – we love being empty nesters (haha – that’s a joke – there’s no such thing as an empty nest) but we love it more when they come home to visit. I have a dog, a pit-bull mix, Keela. In the barnyard I have thirteen hens, Liberty the teenage rooster, Brandy the goat, and Doink the Vietnamese pot-bellied pig.

I’m a horrible photographer.  If you’re looking for gorgeous pictures, you’re in the wrong place.  However, I think my photogenically charming animals make up for my lack of skill – and I promise I’ll be working on getting better.

  1. Everything looks great, but you’ve done this all before I see. 🙂 Brandy looks a lot like the goat my Mom had when I was growing up. She gave milk even though she never even saw a buck (except when she was tiny), she was pretty neat.

  2. You had me at “not so white trash tater tot pie”.
I can’t wait to hear of your animal/farm stories. I love reading about other little farms. I want to be a real farmer someday. Someone who knows a bit of what the heck she’s doing, at least.

    • Christine, thanks for stopping by! The pie is yummy, not to mention somewhat good for you. I promise.

I barely know anything about farming (even though I grew up in rural Texas) but I can google the solution to any and all animal emergencies! And these goofy creatures make me so happy…I love learning and sharing about them.

  3. Hi Joan, the new/old blog looks great! I kind of did the same thing with mine, in a way, as I made it a “blog within a blog” to keep all the farm things on “Farm Friday”. I’m still all over the place, but at least now there’s a SCHEDULE for my rambling!

Anyway, thanks for linking this up with the TALU!

    • Hi Anne, thanks for hopping over to see my new blog! Looking forward to linking up both the new and the old at TALU – it’s such a great place to find and follow new people. We all appreciate the opportunity to share our “babies”!

  4. Hi Joan! I’m so excited you started this new blog. I love everything chicken, so I’m looking forward to all your posts over here!

    • Glad you found your way here, Tammy! I’m making that yummy-looking salad recipe you just shared for dinner tonight – can’t wait to taste it!

  5. I want a Doink! LOL I just HAD to say that! Did you know they have the little pocket pigs that don’t get bigger than a cat?? I’ve been eyeing those, but SOME in our household isn’t so keen (i.e. AGAINST) the idea. ::sigh::

Thanks for visiting Our Side of the Mountain! You’ve got some sweet animals there! Brandy’s pretty adorable too!

    • Thanks for visiting, Jessy! Yeah, I’m pretty lucky to have Doinkers in the barnyard. He’s sometimes a grumpy cuss, but I firmly believe he has a heart of gold!

  6. I live in CO too! Denver suburb… And I for one thought the photos were fantastic! Happy TALU! 🙂

    • Stephanie, are you enjoying this gorgeous Colorado day as much as I am? I’ve been having a great time with the animals in the barnyard! Thanks for hopping over 🙂

  9. Just ONE goat? I thought that was the ultimate no-no and that they were herd animals and you had to have two. How does that work out for you?

    • I thought just one goat was not good too. They came to me as a pair – the owners didn’t want them separated. They were raised almost from birth together. I don’t think they perceive they’re different animals. I’m looking forward to writing more about their unusual relationship!

  10. They are all so cute, but I really love Brandy the goat! Thanks for sharing on the Farmhouse Style Blog Hop! http://www.greeneggsandgoats.com Now about those cocktails… I’m off the check the other blog for inspiration! 🙂

  12. HI,

Thanks for your comment over on my blog. If you’re looking for blogging material, I’d love to read a post that shows and explains how you utilize your one acre for all those animals! 🙂 We’d love to have all those and a big enough garden to provide most of our produce and a small orchard. We’ll see. 🙂

    • Thanks! That’s a great idea. I think I will, especially since I’m hoping to create a space for a much larger garden this year. I appreciate the input! –Joan
