Imagining Summer

Very Excellent Husband Don was correct, as usual.  When I wrote this post, he said there was more snow to come.

The storm we’re in the middle of is THE LAST ONE, right? Please?  Pretty please?  Everyone is posting photos of their seeds popping out of the ground and their baby animals and the new outside projects they’re starting.

And we’re buried under 10″ of snow.  With more to come in the next two days.  So I decided to take a few photos of my favorite places here and imagine how wonderful they will be as soon as summer arrives…

I see lettuce and kale and onions and herbs and broccoli.

Yeah, that's my hoop cold frame somewhere under that snow.

Yeah, that’s the hoop cold frame I just built somewhere under that snow.  Really.

I hear warm summer breezes rustling through the evergreen trees.

I think that's a baby pine cone, right?

I think that’s a litte pine cone, right?

I see baby chicks learning how to roost in a sun-dappled run.

I should really cover the run with plastic next year.

People will be arriving in our backyard for a party…

A flock of these showed up ten years ago in July for VEH Don's 50th birthday. Wonder what will show up this year?

There will be green, green everywhere!

These buds are so ready for some warm weather.

The chickens will be scratching and taking dust baths and waddling around being happy chickens.

If chickens can dream, Louise is dreaming of green grass.

If chickens can dream, Louise is dreaming of grass and bugs and pecking at stuff that’s not white.

The animals will be out enjoying a sunny afternoon.

Today the barnyard was quiet and still.

I will hear birds chirping.  I’ll remember to be happy when they wake me up a little too early in the morning!

We have bazillions of these birds in our backyard. I don’t know if they’re staying, or just passing through.

Adventurous cooking will happen every week.

This is the herb rue. I've never used it when I cook.

This is my rue plant. Even though it’s been in the garden forever, I’ve never used it in a recipe.

There will be long walks with beautiful views of the mountains.  I will enjoy the views.  Keela will enjoy the walks.

That is one unhappy dog.

I’ll be busy building every upgrade I’ve been planning all winter.  I can’t wait to get out my power tools.

Our man in the fence business, Bruce, put the posts in for the new fence. It's my job to finish the project.

Doink will be seeking shade and the cooling mist of a sprinkler.

He's really, really not happy when it's cold outside.

I will welcome a cool afternoon breeze when the heat of August is upon us.

This wind was unpleasant, to say the least.

Brandy will enjoy getting to know everyone who comes over .

It's hard to be curious when you don't want to leave your bedroom.

There will be parties.  Our friends and family will come.  We will have good food and drink and music and dancing.

I see friends. Not snow.

I see friends. Not snow.

Summer wouldn’t be nearly as wonderful without winter.  I’d get tired of being hot and sweaty day in, day out.  So here’s a thank you to winter…  Thanks, winter.  Now, if you don’t mind, take a hike.

  1. Statistically, more snow. Emotionally, we’re ready for sun.

  2. With all the melting snow, at least you’ll be guaranteed of lush green garden to come, no drought possible after all that, plenty of food for everyone…and I can audibly hear party time at your place already:) Cheer up…it’s all coming very soon:)

    • Annie, I love your positive attitude! It was zero degrees when I went out to feed the animals today. Doink the pig was, well, let’s just say his “emotional happy glass” was definitely half empty. 🙂 I’m going to make my last hearty soup of the season today and know that warmer weather is on its way!

    • She’s a mutt I rescued as a puppy out of New Mexico. Definitely got a bit of pit bull. Catahoula is probable. She can climb up a tree after a squirrel and as a youngster she could scale a 6′ fence in the blink of an eye!

  3. I’m with you…spring needs to come. But, you have to keep a good perspective, right? We are expecting still more snow tomorrow. Ugh! I just want some green. So do my hens!

    • You’re so right! I’m using today (another freezing one) to tackle some indoor projects that need my attention. If it was beautiful outside, I’d have a hard time cleaning a closet!

  5. Oh I posted about my seasonal issue today too!!

  9. I feel like Doink right now … wanna bury my nose in the straw (under a blankie) and cuddle up for a nap. Brrrrrrrrrrr. It’s been crazy here (central NY) – freezing one day, beautiful the next. We were supposed to have snow showers on Sun but got lucky and missed that at least. Tell Doink to move over for me. 😉
