I’m Baaack!

There were a lot of chickens at the Fair, but none as lovely as my Sarah, who started molting while I was working.

Well, it was quite the week working the Denver County Fair!

I’m still decompressing and wrapping up loose ends, but I’ve now got all the extra paper (I think I killed a whole forest with the paperwork) recycled and the rest filed.  There’s a nice neat pile of extra supplies ready to take to storage.  A few more e-mails, finalizing the expense report, debriefing meetings with bosses and crew and then I’m done.

Even though I worked the Fair last year in a smaller job, I wasn’t prepared for how much I would miss my regular life this go-round.  Back when I was young and dinosaurs roamed the earth, I worked in the special event world for years.  Every summer my normal life would be supplanted by ridiculously long days of work interrupted only by hard partying.  And I loved it.

Now, not so much.

I did enjoy the work.  And I loved my crew – they ROCKED.  Some of the competitors were awesome.  Some were flat out crazy.  Of course, a few were horrid people that I never want to see again.

Yet as much fun as it was, I HATED being away from home.  My barnyard family was well taken care of by Excellent Neighbor Joy and her kids, but I missed the gentle routine of my day.  I missed my morning barnyard time followed by espresso in front of the computer.  I missed poking my head out the back door to thank a hen when she started belting out the “I’ve laid an egg” song.  I missed walking Keela.

Our shadows were fun on our favorite walking path yesterday.

And I really missed seeing Very Excellent Husband Don as he walked in the front door every day after work.  I missed our evening cocktail, sipped while sitting in our oft photographed cheap plastic adirondack chairs, watching the action in the barnyard.

We're not seeing these two in the barnyard - Rapunzel and Belle are STILL broody. They prefer sharing one nesting box these days.

Sounds like I was gone for months.  It was only five days.  Actually, I wasn’t even GONE.

I simply like being home more than any place in the world.  I get it.  There’s a great big world out there and I’m missing it.   So sue me.

Keela and I walk here almost every day. Remind me why I'd want to go anywhere else?

  2. A week of long days away from everyone is rough .I’m happy to hear everything was a success and completely understand about being at home. In fact i’m finishing up coffee, thinking about my molting girls and what needs to be done around the property today. What a HUGE blessing it is to know and feel we are exactly where we are supposed to be. Life is so good!

    Welcome back buddy!

    • Life IS so good! Feeling like you’re in exactly the place you’re supposed to be is such a gift. Give that new pup a hug from all of us, ok?

  3. Woah, that last photo is breathtaking! With a view like that I’d never want to leave, either. I’m with you – home is my favorite place to be. And that’s exactly how I like it 🙂 Welcome back!

    • Yeah, that daily walk can make almost all my worries go away. Sometimes I think I need to pinch myself to make sure it’s not a dream!
