Goodbye, Liberty

He's a handsome loudmouth.

He’s a handsome loudmouth.

There’s never a dull moment in the barnyard.  Most of those moments are delightful.  Some, less so.

Recently, Liberty the rooster has been crowing (from within the confines of the coop) starting at 4:30am.  Crowing. Almost. Constantly. Every. Morning.

He settles down after around 7am when I open the coop door and he can strut around the barnyard – mostly.  He still gives about ten good crows to let everyone know I’ve been nice enough to let him and the ladies out.

He’s not exactly quiet during the day, either.   After a hen does her “I’ve laid an egg” song, he goes nuts. Like he’s SOOOO proud. Like he wants to tell the world how proud that one of his ladies laid an egg.

I gathered twelve eggs yesterday.  He was loudly proud of each and every one of them.

Today I went out at around 6am, grabbed him and put him in a dog crate in the garage.  It worked, but that’s not a good long term solution.

It’s hard for me to think about, but Liberty needs a new home on a farm.  Luckily, in less time that it took to write this post, I found him one.  My Craigslist ad stressed I was looking for new home, not a stew pot.  A very nice older lady who is starting a new flock on her son’s farm answered the ad in minutes.

And now I’m crying over a rooster.

He’s the only chicken that was hatched from an egg here at Happy Mama Acre.  Maude the hen went broody and I got some fertilized eggs for her to sit on.  One hatched.

He was a beautiful baby.

He was a beautiful baby.

It was so much fun watching Maude do her mama thing.

Maude was the best mama - she kept Liberty close at all times.

Maude was always attentive – she kept Liberty close at all times.

As he grew up Maude tried to distance herself, but Liberty was quite the mama’s boy.  He had to be forced to make his own way in the world.

He was a good learner.

He was a good learner. And he loved his mama.

The three princesses, Jasmine, Rapunzel and Belle are his pride and joy.  They were never far apart in the barnyard.

They made a fine foursome.

They made a fine foursome.

I wonder if they will miss him when he’s gone.  I know I will.

You will be missed, sir.

You will be missed, sir.

  2. Awww, saying goodbye to a bird is indeed hard. You can take joy in the fact that you gave him the most wonderful life any bird could ask for, and he will go on to live happily and healthfully at his new home.

    • I’m hoping that’s the case, Meredith. And I made a deal with the people that took him – if it doesn’t work out, I’ll go pick him up and bring him back here!

  3. Sorry to hear he has to go, but glad you found him a new home where maybe he’ll have a whole harem to crow about. If the ladies are upset about him leaving, maybe a play date can be arranged. 😉

  4. Wow, that is so sad. Do you have visiting rights? I know that chickens sometimes become pets and I would be so sad to see one of my pets have to go. Hopefully he will have a long, happy life anyway.

    • I didn’t ask about visiting, but she said she would call and tell me how the transition is working for Liberty. It made it easier knowing he went to such nice people.

  5. This post made me so sad….but you bring out every reality of a real world called life! We also have one rooster who is as silly and funny as Liberty, but at least no one cares for all the noises he does everyday here…no, not even the hens who are with him 24 hours!! Hope Liberty settles with his happy crowing with the other ladies in the farm:)

  9. It is a sad fact that roosters do not come with a mute button or even a volume switch. Their chances of making it to adulthood are slim anyway. I am hoping that there is a big rooster ranch where all of them can strut and crow without restraint. Rehoming him was a lovely sacrifice you have made.

  13. We have chickens too…in a suburb. Thankfully, there’s families besides us here and there who keep chickens (or goats, or horses). A noisy rooster would be a nuisance for sure. Ours just got cranky, so he found a new home too. The goats can get pretty loud…but the neighbors (so far) don’t seem to mind.
