Chicken Kisses

Up close and personal.

Up close and personal.

I find chicken personalities endlessly fascinating.

Sofia, my only adopted hen (neighbors were down to one girl after multiple predator raids and thought she needed a flock) is the queen of the outliers.  She is one odd bird.  No one picks on her, but on the other hand, she does not have a chicken BFF.  Doink is her best friend.  She still sleeps next to him, even though Louise continues to make it a threesome.

Sofia is INTENSE.  I can feel when she’s behind me, and in the barnyard she is often close to me.  She never hangs out with the other chickens.  I think if she was human she would walk around with kinda squinty eyes and a knotted brow.  She would probably always dress in black.  You would feel slightly uncomfortable if she stared at you.

So I found it odd when I saw Sofia getting up close and personal with Cindy Lou, the hen who frankly has no positive personality traits whatsoever.  Cindy Lou is bossy and unfriendly.  She is a mean girl and I believe her chicken cup is always half empty.

Yet Cindy Lou stood totally still and accepted Sofia’s “kisses”.  (Yeah, I know, they’re not kisses.  But play along with me, ok?)  I’ve seen it happen a few times now.

You don't mind me being this close, do you?

You don’t mind me being this close, do you?

Well then, how about this?

Well then, how about this?

Let me put one right on the kisser, ok?

I’m gonna put one right on the ol’ kisser, ok?

I don't know about you, but I'm feeling much better now.

Come on, can I get a smile?  No?  Well, I know you liked it, even if you’re too tough to admit it.

And so it goes.  Chicken kisses in the barnyard.  It’s just a little thing that happened in the middle of a somewhat unremarkable day.  Just a little thing to make that day…a little sweeter.

  7. Love reading your blog, followed from Homestead Barn Hop, but disappointed that the pictures do not show on my browser. I can see the captions but not the pictures. 🙁

I too, just adopted a chicken who was the last of her flock, and hoping she will find a BFF in the flock.

  8. What a charming post Joan! I loved it 🙂 I guess it resonates with all of us chicken mamas out there! I have seen quite a few chicken kisses in my day but you captured them beautifully 🙂
