A Goat By Any Other Name

He's the George Clooney of goats. Drop dead gorgeous with a twinkle in his eye!

He’s the George Clooney of goats. Drop dead gorgeous!

First, an update.  We’re a little over a week with our beautiful new baby goat.  And things are getting better. Not as fast as I’d like, but then that’s my ongoing lesson in patience.

Amazingly enough, AFTER I decided Brandy needed a friend and I brought this little guy home, I remembered that Brandy had practically never seen another goat.  If I remember the story right, her mom died soon after childbirth.  Doink has been her only animal companion since she was a baby.

I guess it’s a little like parents bringing a new baby home and telling their precious three year-old, “Look, we brought you a playmate!”

I'm trying my best, lady.

Playmate?  I know competition for your affection when I see it, lady.  And I don’t like it!

So there’s lots of extra treats for everyone in the barnyard in this period of adjustment.  Just seems fair.

However, everyone needs to feel safe in the barnyard.  That’s fair, too.  He’s now got two “safe spots” where he can scoot in to when Brandy’s on a tear.

Hmm. This is odd...

Hmm. This is odd…  I don’t fit anymore.

In...Out...In...Out...

In one side…and out the other!

It only looks like a jail. He loves it.

He’s got the lower bunk in the goat shed.  It only looks like a jail.  He loves it.  He’s good about sharing it with the chickens, too!

Keela continues to be curious.

The friendly stare-off.

How you doin’?

Doink continues to be “Eh, whatever.  Just stay out of my bed, ok?”

Doink has been dragging pine branches into the shed to create a fortress on "his side".

Now, about the name.

He came to us as Jester, because he was born on April Fools Day.  Love the concept, but I have a hard time saying the name.  It usually comes out as Chester.  He’s really not a Chester.

Very Excellent Husband Don dubbed him Jester For Now because he knew it would take me a while to figure out what I want to call the little guy.  Jessie was the first name that rolled off my tongue.  Recently, Don’s Very Excellent Father was here and crowned him Jake.  Jessie-Jake.  JJ.  It’s still a work in progress at this point.

We’ll get the name right.  And every day, Little J-man gets a smidge bigger.  Pretty soon Brandy is going to be saying, “Hey, where’s that little thing that was here?  And by the way, where did this BIG thing come from?”

I'm king of the world! (She's not watching, is she?)

  1. Looks like things are starting to go more smoothly! That’s great news. So funny about the name. Sometimes it takes a while to get it just right! 🙂

  2. The names are hard. I want to re-name Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline at the moment. They are way too much like Lucy and Ethel!

  3. So happy to hear things are working themselves out over there. We are still in teenage chicken babysit mode over here …. Takes time, these changes we do in our barn yard. Names ARE hard, you’ll know instantly when you find the one. Smooches to Doink. I sure love your writing style, always makes me smile. Happy Monday friend.

  4. How Sweet little Jester, Jessie, Jessie-Jake, J-man is. My daughter, sister, and grandfather are all named Jessie (or Jesse for grandpa).

I love the way you gave little J-Man some safe spots all his own. Brandy will warm up to him eventually, she is making great progress so far it seems. How cool that Doink is doing some redecorating…that is so fascinating because we raised pigs and they were just messy dumb things, Doink is so much smarter. Wonder if its because he is a pot-belly which is a pet, and ours were feeder hogs…just meant for eating?

I’ve though about getting a pot-belly but the hubby’s ex wife had one and let it in the house so needless to say it was a bad experience and he doesn’t like them. :-/ Maybe I should get him to read about Doink and his fun personality.

Looking forward to your updates on Brandy and J-Man’s relationship!

  5. So cute! I’ve been talking a lot about getting goats. I wanted to name one Buttercup. I’m afraid this has become a running joke in my family, because we live in a townhome 🙁
