Lonesome Lucy

Poor Lucy.  Since her gal pal Ethel got killed by the raccoon, she’s been out of sorts.  Yes, from time to time Scarlett will fly over the fence into the yard with her, but Scarlett is not the adventurous type.

So now Lucy makes her own way in the world, usually alone.

She's the only visitor to the Russian Sage chicken jungle.

She’s the only visitor to the Russian Sage chicken jungle.

She scratches the mulch out of the flowerbeds daily.  The messiness drives Very Excellent Husband Don nuts, so I try and rake it up before he gets home.  I think of it as my upper body workout for the day.

Stay away from the flowers!

Stay away from the flowers!

While she spends most of her time in the bed adjacent to the barnyard, she’s recently been exploring more of the yard.

She likes to hangs out in the long grass close to the house.

I wonder what the other hens think of her.

She looks like the girl sitting by herself in the lunchroom at school, right?

Little by little, she’s been seeking out my company.

She joined me in the garage to see how my latest project was coming along.

Do you think she wanted to see what I was writing about her?

My favorite time with her is in the morning when I first go outside.  While everyone else in the barnyard starts screaming for their breakfast (oh what a ruckus they make!) she comes running up as if to say, “Hey!  Nice to see you again!  Did you sleep well?”

Most every morning she's right by my side. My pal Lucy and me.

My pal Lucy and me.

Life just doesn’t get much better than that.

  1. Lucy looks lovely.
It appears you may have a new BFF. She feels ‘social’ but just doesn’t know how to go about making new friends.
Who knows? Her new friend might not be another chicken. Your barnyard seem ripe to new relationships!!!
    You go girl Lucy!!

    • Ya know, my favorite thing in the world is to hang out in my backyard. Apparently Lucy feels the same – just what you want in a BFF!

Lucy is a beautiful girl and apparently a good companion! She sounds like a great bugger – digging in the mulched flower beds. Just doing her job and earning her keep!

I like that Lucy alot. She’s one beautiful chicken! Does she stay inside at night so she will be safe? I’d say you’ve got a good pal there, even if she does tend to make a mess at times.

why isn’t she with the other chickens?

    • She certainly could stay in the barnyard with everyone else, but she flies over the fence into the backyard every day. Her choice!

  5. I loved this little story about Lucy!

  6. Have you thought about trimming her flight feathers? Since chickens are such flock animals it seems like she would eventually want to hang out with the other girls. My one hen, who was alone after my other passed, would hang out with me like that 🙂 I got more pullets and then she became a great older sister…

    • She seems to really like flying over the fence and it doesn’t bother me at all. Although she doesn’t seem interested in the new chicks in the barnyard, maybe she will when they get older 🙂

  7. Darling story… Lucy dances to the beat of her own drummer! Gotta love that! Thanks for sharing on the Farmgirl Friday Blog Hop!

  8. Sweet Lucy girl seems to love your company and maybe find some comfort in you? My Minnie girl is like, though all my girls follow me around like a dog she is different. She seeks me out and calls me from my front door. So fun when they are engaging like that. How are the babies???? Maybe she could become friends with them soon?

    • I was just thinking that when Mama Rapunzel starts rejecting the babies (although they’re not babies anymore!) maybe Lucy will take a liking to them. We’ll see 🙂
