Curious Cows

Not all of the visitors to the barnyard are unwelcome, like the red-tailed hawk.  Yesterday when I finished the morning feeding/cleaning routine I discovered the back fence was lined with curious cows.

That cow has really, really short legs...

They don’t know what to think of Doink.  That cow has really, really short legs…

Here comes Brandy, challenging them to a staring contest.

It didn’t take long before all the goats were back there.

No really, does this not look like the goats are playing soccer? YES IT DOES!

No really, does this not look like the goats are playing soccer with that old basketball?  YES IT DOES!  And the crowd goes wild!

You might have noticed a certain someone in the crowd…

Hello, handsome!

Hello, handsome!

That fence looks awfully, I don't know, insecure, doesn't it? Like he could just walk right through it if he wanted to?

There is something about a cow.  Don’t know why.  Best-Neighbor-Ever Joy’s fence is only 4′ tall and topped with a nice 2×6, so I climbed into her yard and sat on the fence and had a nice little chat with the bovines.

They're just so SERIOUS.

They’re just so SERIOUS.  Gorgeously SERIOUS.

I wanted to bring this little girl into the house and snuggle.

Wonder how big those horns are going to get?

Wonder how big those tiny horns are going to get?

It itches...right there...

It itches…right there…

I could of sat there all day.  There was another huge bull that I didn’t get a good shot of because he was LICKING MY LEG.  I gave him lots of head scratches and he kept nuzzling me. He was humongous, and oh so sweet.  Maybe he was thanking me for not eating beef for the past thirty years.

It was a picture-perfect “crisp fall morning”- simply glorious.  I knew my day would be busy and full, but for a few minutes as the sun was coming up…I was able to do the thing that makes me the happiest – hangin’ out with the animals.

Bye-bye momma. Come back soon, ok?

  1. Great post. I too would rather just hang out with the animals.
Also love my neighbors cows, as do my horses and donkeys.

  2. My children and I love your photos, Joan. 🙂 Your animals are beautiful! My children are wondering what type of cow that is with the long horns?
We have longhorns in our area, but they don’t look quite like that.
    Blessings,
