Mostly Human

Here's where the voices inside my head get to say what's on their minds!

Fun With Milk—Making Butter and Cheese

I recently purchase a herd share from a local farmer.  Here in Colorado, that's how raw milk can change hands.  The sale of raw milk is illegal, but if I buy a herd share, then pay my monthly "boarding" fees, I get raw milk from my "share" of the herd.  It must take lawmakers a lot of time to come up with something that convoluted, but hey, I'm getting my milk.  From happy cows.  With names.  I'm … [Read more...]

Sometimes The Journey Sucks

When I wrote last week's post about Jasmine and Big Man, I had no, no, no idea that I would be writing this one. I killed Big Man and Little Man yesterday. I killed them because my neighbor who complains about everything complained about the roosters crowing. This, in a neighborhood that allows roosters and all other manner of farm animals.  She came over and threatened a lawsuit.  I do not … [Read more...]

A Little Christmas Surprise

I usually write in the early hours of the morning, right after I've hauled myself out of bed.  I wrap myself in a thrift store quilt—my couch quilt—that could not possibly have more dog hair on it.  Tiny cup of espresso (the first of several) by my side, Keela whacking my computer to gain more room on my lap.  We don't have a fireplace, but by the miracle of technology I can stream a flickering, … [Read more...]

Introducing Chicken Mama Art

Where does the time go?  Not in a deep, oh-I'm-getting-older sense.  Just the time to get all the regular stuff done!  I'm constantly amazed at the end of the day by the number of things I needed to accomplish just to keep going in the right direction.  I'm sure I'm not alone...yes? Please tell me I'm not alone! But, the holiday decorations are up, the house is relatively clean, the bills are … [Read more...]

We Give Thanks

It's a small celebration at Happy Mama Acre this year, and we're not complaining.  Close family and our best friends, plus a few friends planning to drop by for a cocktail...or two. With less hustle and bustle to the day, it give us a bit more time to be grateful and reflect on the wonderfulness of barnyard life. We are grateful for good times.   We are grateful for good … [Read more...]

Death. I’m Still Learning.

I'm just gonna launch into this one.... My oldest hens are three and a half years old.  Those ten sweet little chicks who arrived in the mail in May of 2011 started me on this entire journey.  Making the decision to get those original chickens changed my life.  I am happier because of them. I smile more.  I have become more curious.  I seek answers to questions - albeit weird, specific … [Read more...]

Curious Cows

Not all of the visitors to the barnyard are unwelcome, like the red-tailed hawk.  Yesterday when I finished the morning feeding/cleaning routine I discovered the back fence was lined with curious cows. It didn't take long before all the goats were back there. You might have noticed a certain someone in the crowd... There is something about a cow.  Don't know why. … [Read more...]

One Word. Heartbroken.

Sometimes it really feels like the universe is playing pile on.  Now is one of those times for me.  For a month we have had one sucky thing after another happen. Big life-changing ones and little nagging ones.  Before yesterday, they were exhausting and a little scary.  Today, I'm really knocked off my foundation. I am beyond sad to say that my sweet little goat Pumpkin is no longer with … [Read more...]
